The daytime drama of CBS “As The World Turns” is now cancelled. CBS announced that “As The World Turns” will broadcast its 13,661st episode on September 2010.
This is not the first time CBS cancelled a daytime drama series, “Guiding Light” has also been cancelled by CBS. Procter & Gamble are the ones responsible for making “As The World Turns” and “Guiding Light” an awesome drama series.
CBS and other networks have continued to cancel daytime drama TV series because daytime dramas have been fading as a genre for years with more women joining the work force and the increased number of channels offering alternatives like news, talk, reality and game shows. In tough economic times, paying casts, producers and writers proved prohibitive to networks when there were cheaper alternatives.
CBS has only two daytime dramas left: “The Young and the Restless” and “The Bold and Beautiful.”
Although the least watched soap in daytime with 2.51 million viewers in average, “As the World Turns” is a frequent award winner. At the upcoming 37th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards, the soap scoops 13 nominations including Outstanding Lead Actor and Actress in a Drama Series. The ceremony is to be held in Las Vegas on Sunday, June 27.

what a sham…I’m 45 and have watched ATWT and GL since I was 8 with my grandparent who are no longer living…and would have watched for anther 40 yrs…yes I will live that long and good luck on finding dedicated kids to watch 2hrs of your time slot for the next 40 years….CBS you suck…in daytime from here on out…you’ll not find a more dedicated viewer…and I won’t take the time to view your new short lived talk shows… I DVR’d ATWT and GL because I am a working PROFESSIONAL…and you have lost me….I would catergorize myself as a core deposit for CBS….being in the banking field….you’re going to lose your core deposit base….VERY DISSAPPOINTED…AND WON’T BE WATCHING ANY LONGER..
It’s not that major….it happens! CBS has to grow just like everyone else. It’s time for something different.
Thanks for ATWT!
I miss The Guiding Light and I am so sad that As The World Turns is being cancelled. I am 57 and watched these shows with my mother. Why would you cacel these shows? Now when the world turns is over I hate it that there is a stupid game show on. I am going to feel even more empty when ASWT is gone. And then you relplace The Guiding light with a stupid game show. Just another thing in my life that I have no control over. Very bad call on your part. These characters have become part of my life and now there gone. I cant tell you how sad this makes me.
I couldn’t believe my ears when I heard that CBS was cancelling As The World Turns! What a STUPID move!! I have watched ATWT for 52 of its 54 years and have it set to record “every day,” as I have had ever since that type of recording was available. Losing this show will be like losing part of my family. I have watched from high school, through raising my kids and working full time and now into retirement. I don’t believe there is ANYTHING that CBS will be able to put in this time slot that will take the place of ATWT. I am very disappointed in P&G and CBS for making this move. You have lost another “faithful viewer” of your shows and P&G has also lost a “faithful consumer.” This is a very serious error on the part of CBS especially in todays economic time. ATWD is like a “comfort food” for the soul.
i remember watching as the world turns all my life and i am 35yrs old.i liked the old lily on there better then the new ones they put on there. my husband never watch as the world turns until he got with me. now he watches to and sad because no more shows as the world turns. he like molly on there and old lily too. i will not be watching any other daytime soaps. i wish all the actors and actress find better jobs and good luck.
I began watching ATWT the year it launched, the year I became a bride. My whole family, including sisters, cousins, children loved the series, and recorded it if they couldn’t watch in real time.
Watching the Daytime Emmys recently, I was horrified that the insipid, plot repeating, poorly acted “The Bold and the Beautiful” received the highest rewards. I turned that program off the fourth time wimpy Ridge and Brooke/Taylor decided to to swap beds again. Yawn.
ATWT has quirky, richly developed characters (eg: Henry,) and the cast members interact seamlessly between plot schemes. The sets are nice, the topics timely and sometimes controversial. It isn’t cutting edge, there are no airhead teenagers sleeping around, but the characters have matured nicely, like fine wine.
What a shame. Will it be replaced by another game show with slavishly greedy, incipient contestants? Probably. But I won’t be watching, just like I’ve stopped tuning in the CBS news and most of the evening lineup.
Proctor and Gamble is a well known, respected brand. Will it save a lot of bucks by canceling? Probably. Will it lose some customers? You bet. At least one, me. Sometimes, Proctor and Gamble, it’s nice to remember what loyalty is, and that “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
I have watched ATWT since a young child with my mother. I am now 56 and still watch it whenever I am home from work. I was also a fan of Guiding Light. It is very sad to see this era pass. I watch Young and the Restless but on Soapnet so, whenever I am home now, I will not be watching CBS in the daytime. Very very sad.
I too have been watching ATWT for a very long time. I recently went back to work full time and have not missed an episode. When the kids are hogging the TV that I recorded it on, I would watch it on the computer.
I am in my 40′s and had watched GL since High School. I was very saddened to see it cancelled and then to find out that one of my other shows is being cancelled too. I certainly won’t be recording nor watching anything that takes it’s time slot. Good luck with advertisers.
Tried watching the bold and the beautiful – yuck – terrible acting and story lines. Now I’ll be watching NBC and my only other soap Days of Our Lives.
Good luck to all the cast! Will look forward to seeing take a place on Days and a different station
Like those that have already commented, I began watching ATWT and GL with my mother and grandmother. I continued the tradition by watching it with my daughter and daughter-in-law. We had a special gathering in order to watch the very last episode of GL. The three of us are all working professionals who have also recorded all of the episodes and watched them later. I do not understand how those of you with P&G and CBS can even think of doing this. It makes me very sad. I am not pleased with this decision at all. As others have stated previously, CBS has lost a faithful viewer and P&G has lost a faithful consumer.
lol, not a bit sad, except they should get rid of the game shows too! just my thoughts!!!
I have been watching ATWT since I can remember with my grandma and she watched it with her grandma I am 24 now and I still watch it everyday even though i work 2 jobs thats what a DVR is for. So i have to say CBS you are losing alot of valuable viewers and I too will not be watching anything that fills its time slot.
Reality TV sux at least a soap u know they are acting and its not just some big lie!!!!!!
What a TERRIBLE thing to do. I sure will miss the program. I have watched it all my life. I can still remember mom having it on when I was very very young, I am finished with C B S.
I always hated Soap Operas, and could never get into them much. I grew up with my mother watching General Hospital, and couldn’t stand that show! A few yrs ago, i was stuck without cable and ended up getting sucked into the B&B and then ASWT
I can say now that i have been a faithful viewer since! My husband came home from work one day with the news that it was getting cancelled, but because i’d heard nothing of it, i thought it was rumors. I am so saddened to see it’s not a rumor!!! Why would this show get cancelled????? Is there nothing we can say to change this?? I know if there was some sort of petition, i’d be signing my life away on it! LOL This is just not right! I have this show permanently set to record everyday to my DVR and look forward to sitting down at night when my kids are in bed to watch it. These characters too have become a part of my life. I think about them as if they’re real, anticipating the next episode! Idk what i will do without this show. I am very upset to say the least
Really?? As The World Turns?? Why dont you pick one of the other hundreds of shows to cancel? I think we start a petition to stop the cancellation of the OUTSTANDING show
I also am a devoted fan and have been forever. Those characters feel like family since I have watched since Penny and Lisa were teens. And now, what, 3 generations later, the story line is still vital and interesting. I didn’t care for adding the gay element to the plot, but at least you don’t show that male kissing very often! YUK!
Anyhow, I will be very sad when the show is gone. Another talk show? Oh, please! Too much of the same old same old…..Please reconsider this decision and keep ATWT on the air!
I am sad to see that an award winning drama with an exceptional cast is going off the air. this especially seeing they have a beautiful set of gay role models. The characters of Luke and Noah will be missed. I think this was brought on my the religious right and that is a crime.
Luke and Noah are special and will keep a place in my heart as will ATWT!
This is ridicules…First GL, now ATWT, in this day and age not many people are home to watch daytime TV due to employment, but we all know how to use a DVR!!! I have been watching these shows since I was a child with my mother and grandmother and not only will I be sorry to see them go, but so will my daughters. CBS is dissapointing generations of women who have enjoyed watching them. I have always been a faithful watcher of CBS shows, but maybe I will will have to start trying other networks for my entertainment???? Very sad. I certainly won’t be excited to to watch another talk show and will not be setting my DVR for it.
Words can not describe how I feel. I am 32 years old and have been watching GL and ASWT with my mother since I was in “elementary school”. It doesn’t matter that more woman are Professionals in todays world. From the time I remember we would record with the VCR, than DVD and now we DVR. If anything people have access to better technology today than they did over 50 years ago. When one finds enjoyment from something, they will figure out how to keep up with it.
These characters are part of our lives. There were soo many times my mother and I would talk about Reva as part of our own family life, and relating to them. With replacing these historic shows with game shows and talk shows, CBS you are going down. Instead of GL, now there is a ridiculous show with a scary horse voiced Cook who is a wanabe Martha Stewart and now acts like a hot shot talk show host who interviews celebrities. I think she should continue cooking and eating her brownies and getting fatter and fatter instead.
CBS you should be ashamed of yourselves. I hope that you end up with less and less advertisements, and realize your mistakes.
How come your station is the only one canceling shows??
I can go on for pages, but I guess it won’t matter.
CBS shame on you
I am also very disappointed with the cancellation of both GL and ATWT. I am 52 years old and have been watching these shows since I was a teen. They are the only shows I DVR as I also am a working professional. I love my “time” when I get to watch my soaps and my family respects it- even smiles about it! When P & G took over the shows, I was skeptical of their outcome. We suffered thru the terrible way PG tried to get the actors to mention their products on the shows and I saw the end then. I have stopped buying PG products and will never watch the new shows they are putting in the time slots- I don’t care what they are. Good luck PG and CBS- you are going to need it- but I won’t be watching to see it happen.
I’m suprised that As The World Turns is going it has continued to grow and change and bring more interesting things to keep you wondering. This is the only Soap Opera that I continued to watch through out the years. I’m really suprised to see Bold and the Beautiful and Young and the Restless which in my opinion Suck have out lasted and out shined As The World Turns. I pay to have CBS on my TV bill just so I could watch my As The World Turns. I guess this is money back in my pocket I will be canceling your channel from my service. Thanks for nothing!
I agree completely and wholheartedly with lisa shoup. will try to boycott P & G and will not watch whatever CBS puts in that slot. (same as GL). VERY VERY DISAPPOINTED.
fisrt guiding light now as the world turns, i am truely disappointed – cbs , and i have to say there are still alot of ur shows – at night- that i love , and i will miss them all because when as the world turns ends- I WILL NO LONGER BE WATCHING ur stasion. and im sure there are a lot of people who fell the same way. hope ur happy- CAUSE WE’ER NOT!
ive been watching cbs soaps for 54 years cbs has always been my favrite station untill now you took off guilding light now as the world what next i have 5 generation mother me daughers granddaughter great great daughter fans shame on you
I began watching As the World Turns with my mother when I was in kindergarten and still do today. That is 47 years of watching. Even though I work, I still record the show. Watching these characters get themselves in and out of trouble helps me to unwind each day. It is so sad that they are no longer going to be on television. I think it is a mistake to remove the show, just as it was to cancel Guiding Light. Although other day time shows will take their place, like talk shows, game shows, etc., they are a dime a dozen and all so similar. They will not interest me enough to bother taping them. I am very dissappointed in CBS and Proctor and Gamble, although I am sure they do not care about their viewers in my age group.
I am very sad and upset to hear that CBS is cancelling ATWT. After they gave Guiding Light the axe, I was repulsed by thier choice of a replacement show. I turn the TV off immediatly after ATWT so I won’t even have to hear the beginning of Let’s Make A Deal. Please!! That show was lame the first time it was on the air! Although Wayne Brady is a tallented performer, I really believe his tallent is wasted on a show like Let’s Make A Deal. Come on CBS. Save As The World Turns. It’s a quality show that your network surely needs and if another lame show like Let’s Make A Deal is what’s in store for us, the whole network is probably doomed! I for one, won’t be watching.
Not pleased with CBS at all with this decision…I am a full time worker who tapes As The World Turns religiously EVERYDAY and have been since I was a little girl. I grew up watching As The World Turns with my grandmother and father; both of which have passed away..I am 39 and when I watch As The World Turns I feel like they are with me….It is the ONLY show from CBS that I do tape..honestly I don’t think I will be LOOKING for another show on CBS to replace. I also watched GUIDING LIGHT and that is now gone also…Wish CBS and PG much luck in trying to make up for this decision….I most definitely won’t be watching it’s replacement or be a consumer for P&G…This is the well rounded cast and most down to earth story line…I wish them all luck and can’t wait to see them in upcoming movies or shows hopefully on NBC or ABC…It would be GREAT if the whole cast could stay together and switch to NBC or ABC!!…hint hint
Will there be any CDs or DVDs available covering all or most of the years of ATWT episodes? Depending on price, I’d perhaps buy them.
I sincerely hate to see this soap cancelled. Like many others, I’ve watched and followed ATWT since I was about 15. I can’t believe it is the least watched soap on the air. The story lines have so many more facets than the other ones. The others seem to be the same over and over and over, and the scenes don’t change much either.
Oh well………….I guess I have to suffer from CHANGE.
Thanks, ATWT and characters for numerous years of entertainment.
I have watched ATWT and GH since I was a teenager with my mother
and sisters and aunts as well. But both shows have become somewhat
stupid over the last few years. It is time for a change unless the
writers can do better to keep the show interesting. As for the game
shows or whatever replaces these shows I won’t be watching, I can find
something better to do with my time now.
Not a smart move at all. This show has worked it’s story line to now offer characters that everyone of every age can relate to.
Having Barbara who has been a character on the show have a new story line, and Luke and his new life style.
I’d be happy to write for you and I’ll bet your ratings would go up.
The character who replaced Liberty needs to be replaced.
Katie’s story line is totally gone, not interesting and having Chris involved at all is not exciting either, he may have been ok on guiding Light but not this show.
This is devastating. Do these people not understand that this is not just a tv show? I started watching ATWT with my mother as a child. From my earliest memory. We taped it and watched it every evening. I continued watching it all through college. My roommate and I would record it and watch it every night. I still remember how upset we were when Tonio died dropping from the helicopter. Many other memories as well. These were family members to us. We loved Sierra and Craig (original). The real Lily and Holden. Lucinda of course! This is so wrong. They are killing out a section of our family. I am 40 years old and have 4 children. ATWT has been a part of my life. I cannot believe they are killing off soap operas. For a stupid talk show???
I am so mad. I am 37 and have been watching “Young and The Restless”, “Guiding Light”, and ” As the World Turns” since before I was 2yrs old with my mother. I love all of them and am very disappointed that my day dreams are being destroyed. These stories give us an escape from a 12 hour work day, kids yelling, husbands yelling, and all other duties we have. The life long stories give me and other women a chance to get away. We see these as a vacation. Why would anyone take away these daily vacations from us that we have earned by catering to everyone else in our lives? It is such a sad time for all of us!
How can you all possibly think that this is a good choice? I think if you have to choose, then choose the soaps that were added last. I miss “Guiding Light” and will miss “As the World Turns”. I and others will be extremely **”FURIOUS”** if you cancel “Young and The Restless”!!!!
I also have watched atwt since I was 14, Now at 64 and disabled. there isn’t much to look forward to these day’s and I know it’s silly but I still look forward to atwt. In reading these letter’s I see it affect’s all age group’s. If P&G were to read these letter’s they must know their product’s sell to alot of people who see the ad’s on atwt.
I am so disappointed in you CBS. I know if you tried you could find another sponsor for ATWT. I can’t believe another one bites the dust.
I hate reality shows, games shows and talk shows. There has to be something better, I know, soap operas………. Please find someone to take up where P&G left off. I have watched these soaps since I was in high school and it will not be the same with them gone. I still miss Guiding Light not being here. Too much is changing now. Don’t take our soaps from us. I will not be able to survive. I might have to go postal, you wouldn’t want that would you? Anywho, don’t call me for anything and don’t expect me to watch CBS any longer. You suck.
Im a 47 year old man ,and Im not ashamed to say I love Athwt, My mother was watching the show when she learned of JFK s assasination. I was five mths old crawling on the floor in front of the tv. As the world turns is 2nd only to YnR. I record it, and have for years. I feel sad as the end nears, I wont be watching or recording their replacements. Its kinda like losing an old friend, or a death in the family, they have been there all my life. The times are changing but Im not sure if everything is for the best.
Let’s see, I quit watching Days Of Our Lives and General Hospital to watch As The World Turns and Guiding Light. Guess I shouldn’t have switched networks since CBS doesn’t care about it’s viewers but just about the money. How sad!
I don’t watch talk or game shows so I guess I won’t be watching your network any longer.
I WAS DEVASTATED WHEN I HEARD THE NEWS. ATWT IS ONE OF THE BEST DAYTIME SHOWS ON TV. I LOVE THE CHARACTERS AND CAN’T BELIEVE THEY WILL BE GOING OFF THE AIR.
I WAS ALSO A FAN OF GUIDING LIGHT AND WAS SAD TO SEE THAT SHOW END. I THINK YOU ARE ALL MAKING A MISTAKE BY CANCELLING THE DAYTIME SHOWS. IT JUST WON’T BE THE SAME ANYMORE.
I too have watched GL and ATWT since I was a child. Along with my late grandmother and mother. I had just got my husband hooked on GL and it cancelled and then he got hooked on ATWT and now it is also being cancelled. He thinks he is devastated! I grew up with it. We DVR it and watch it together at night. It is part of our time together. We will no longer watch CBS. We stayed clear of their other soap operas because they are a little “too much”. We really hope that CBS will reconsider and even come back with Guiding Light!!
It’s sad that CBS has had to cancel two really great daytime soaps i think most women if they can’t watch them during the day they record them I’m one of them. It was really hard to let the Guiding Light go Josh and Reva were apart of so many familes that watched faithfully. I do hope instead of replacing ATWT with a game show maybe you should make The Bold and the Beautiful an hour long series. I pray you do not cancel the bold and the beautiful or the young and the restless these soaps are amazing. I am glad to see Carly moving over to the young and the restless but what about the rest of the cast hopefully you’ll find something for them or different backers or a different network to carry these shows. Sorry to see you go ATWT you’ve been a great show to watch thank you to all the characters who put their hearts and souls out there for us….
I too am very dissapointed with the cancelling of ATWT. I was also very dissapointed with the cancelling of Guiding light as well. I have been watching it since my children were babies and are now all grown. I also remember my Grandmother viewing ATWT when I was growing up. I too DVR’d both soaps. I found it relaxing to watch when I came home from work. Now I am losing yet another soap. I too will not watch whatever will take the place of ATWT as I do not watch the game show that has replaced Guiding light. For those who do not understand it is more then the “soap” that we are dissapointed about. It is the Memories and the warmth of family times past. ATWT and Guiding Light served as a “connection” to that. Actually that is just about all that I watched on tv. I guess now it goes off.
I agree with all above. Cancelling As the World Turns is a big mistake. How sad. The stories, writing and acting are the best on daytime & some primetime. that’s an idea..put it on primetime, the followers will follow it.
Ditto what Rye said, through and through.
Like most of the others have said, I’ve been watching for years and am incredibly sad to see it to. I have a young child and don’t feel like ATWT is appropriate for him to watch, but I have faithfully DVR’d it every day for over 2 years now and I am heartbroken that it is going off the air. Not seeing my favorite characters on TV every day is going to hurt and I don’t think I’m going to take it very well. CBS, are you taking into account how many people record this show every day? Sure, more women are in the work force now, but many record it and watch it online. Are these viewers counted as well? All I know is that an awful lot of people are incredibly unhappy about this decision. Guess I’ll start recording Y&R on soapnet now, so I can be done with CBS.
I can only echo what others have said. I, too, am a 45 year fan of As The World Turns taping it every day. It was my after-work stress reliever when I was working and my afternoon relaxer now that I’m retired. I am extremely disappointed in the CBS programming executives and P&G to the point that I intend to boycott both and encourage others to do the same. After all, why should I invest myself in another CBS program only to have them yank it off the air?
I can’t believe that ATWT is being cancelled! I love this soap. Way better than I like B&B. Please don’t canel it.
I have been watching ATWT for as long as I can remember also. I used to watch it with my great grandmother and my grandmother. I was so disappointed to hear it was being canceled. I know some things have to change but why not cancel something else. I think CBS should do a pole and let people vote to decide if it should be left on air or not.
CBS sucks for canceling As the World Turns.I will not be watching the talk show and I hope it flops.I also will not be watching any shows on this channel ever again.
i dont watch soaps, but i remember watching As The World Turns when i was like 4 years old until I went to college, my mom would tape it every day. I def know the characters really well, and even though I dont watch it now, it makes me sad ATWT won’t be on everyday at 2PM. These characters are family to people. Like F&ck u CBS and P&G, what are u gonna replace it with Brad Garret hosting some terrible gameshow? Just Terrible. Its been on for like almost 60 fu&kin years!
P&G have made a finacial decision. It is very disappointing. I too Tivo ATWT. If you as a viewer are frustrated or feeling helpless about the loss of ATWT, please, please BOUYCOT all P&G products. Find alternative products and NEVER LOOK BACK. You are the consumer. You have the power to let P&G know that you will never forgive them for cancelling ATWT and GL. Read your labels…if it is a P&G product, put it back on the shelf and SMILE as you put an alternative product into your shopping cart. THIS is your power over P&G. Please use it.
Please bouycot all P&G products.
