OK…right after it ended and they showed the empty beach…I was like WTF! I thought they were trying to say that they all died in the crash. But now I don’t think at all that they did. They kept saying that everything that happened, happened. So everything they went through happened. Hurley stayed to be Jacob and have Ben as his #2 and the rest got away on the plane with Jack dying. That all happened. The other reality that they were showing was some time later (perhaps void of time) and its basically pergatory. So I don’t consider that the ending. It ended with Jack dying and Hurley continuing. The other universe was a way of showing some closure with all the lives we have been involved in the past 6 years. So while I wish they would have given more answers…I am honestly happy with the ending. It was a truly beautiful episode though!

I hated the end, I’m. They had an entire season to explain the questions that we had and they didn’t. The show was about the mystery and finding out the truth. all they did was make more questions. I understand the end but, it was not enough. It got all spiritual on me.
Christian Shepard come on. 6 years man

  4. Steven says:

Didn’t the show-writers say that the whole ‘death’ scenario was false back when the very first episodes were being aired? This feels like betrayal. I mean, okay, 90 minutes of the finale was spectacular, but to have this as THE explanation to it all, is a load of crap. Not being able to please everyone is not a valid excuse. They said that being ‘all dead’ wasn’t true, and now it is? Come on.

  5. Baz says:

I think the writers got themselves all twisted up and just made things get a little bit too complicated. i think after watching a series for six years waiting around for months and months in between the ended should have been way way better than that, that, in my view was a very very poor ended for a series of this magnitude. the whole series has been questions and the ending just added more and more questions when it should have explained it all to us. all i got from the ending is that they are all dead, they died in the plain crash and all that we have been watching for years was just make believe that they all made up to stick with each other, what a load a S**&. and in all this as well anyone knows why you seen everyone back and not seen one flash back, clip or other of the black African bloke who was building the church and the mist killed him where the hell did he go why wasn’t he in any a the clips after he died and everyone else came back? Very disappointed six years a waiting and this is all? POOR!!!

I absolutely loved the ending of Lost and feel sorry for the fans that really hated the ending. I cannot believe that they would think that they wasted 6 years, when i am sure that they look forward to watching it every week like the rest of us. Lost has taken me on a mystical, magical ride that made me wonder and imagine. Thank you. You really got to know the characters like they were your friends and I will miss them. I think it was a proper ending. Lost took me on a journey that I will never forget. It was sad to say goodbye to the characters of Lost.

    The story was always spiritual.

People get too caught up in the technical specifications of the island in my opinion. Did we really need to know more about what a magical fountain, electromagnetic properties or omnipotent beings?

The story was always about people, sociology, existentialism, spirituality on the island. Refer to the flashbacks all throughout the series when you watch again.

In my view, the island is like a metaphor for the mystery and unexpected beauty of life. So the entire story is a portrayal of this beautiful tapestry of life, relationships and experiences. And there is a subtlety of what is to come with the afterlife thing all throughout the series. You have frequent references to theism covering a multitude of concepts all throughout the series, Dharma, I-Ching, Christianity/bible, and thats just series 1!

So here we start with this ‘experience’, life, people lost on the island. and now we have the hidden message which is slowly being revealed. THe concept of rediscovering life and experiencing it from the position of being dead. Interpreting meaning from it and introspection.

Another interesting thing to comment on is the Good/Evil on the island, but I’ll leave that interpretation for you to consider later.

So there you have the message of the series. Life is ‘lost’, and it gives us a glimpse into the experience on life from the actors in this series then compels us to consider their lives and ours and what they meant from the perspective of being dead.

I think part of the magic of this series is it doesnt have to conform to any religion per say. Its really just existential and philosophical at its core. The place from series 6 doesnt have to be a ‘purgatory’, it can just suggest for you to think about what life means to you when you go, and for say the sole reason of how you choose to live your life now.

I knew right from series one this was where it was going to head. I was researching all the symbolism that the series hinted on throughout. I had a feeling it was going to be this evolved 21st century existential/spiritual journey so i was really moved by the last series.

My one criticism would be that they went on too much about technical specifications and sub-plot storylines that they seem to have lost a lot of poeple with the overall message. I guess this was part of weaving in a tonne of sub-plot/sub-text and a whole range of other issues so it could meat out an entire series.

Ultimately in my mind what Jack’s father said to him in a few minutes at the end was the message of the whole series, so hundreds of hours of other storyline seems to cloud things a bit.

Anyway, other than this slight flaw I thought the series/writers were brilliant. 5 stars.

  8. Luke says:

It was an awesome ending. I dont understand how you could have any questions. They all had somthing they had to do before they died. The island was nothing. Everyone in the church went to Heaven or moved on whatever. Hurly went to Heaven, Ben has not yet found what he needs to move on so he will go back to the island. Its pretty freaking simple! Good vs Evil. Life and Death. To compare this to the saproanos ending is lame. This was riddled with answers. Nuff said.

    Hi there,
This was Gilligan’s Island on steroies!!! But just as Gilligan was fun to watch so to LOST . Whats next ?

  10. Ry says:

Lost was an amazing show from Ep1, but I do feel cheated with the ending.
The isiland was a character itself just like the rest of the cast but when it came time for that character to be explained and have some closure we got nothing. Ok few things, why was Jacob’s mom protecting a place no one could find? After the smoke monster was released I get why they had to protect it, and didn’t his mom say if you go in it’s worse then death? Yet Hugo, Ben, Jack, smoke locke and Desmond all went in no prob and only to find the cork of life… But it only seemed to be the life of the island since it started to fall apart when it was out, so he puts it back in and….. The island is now alive and not gonna die? Kinda thought it was not delt enough attention and they missed a chance to give this HUGE island character a chance to be explained, I don’t want every anwser but all the characters got a chance to be complete so why not this one? And I’m sorry I’m not religious so to find out this whole last season WAS them in purgatory or something was a big let down, they delt with everyones view on life and death, man of faith vs man of science and always did them well and I enjoyed both aspects of it (don’t have to be religious to enjoy it still) but this all felt sloppy and rushed and to be honest it felt like a waste of the season, and why in this heaven ending were so many characters not there? Not to mention the ones in the last ep like frank, miles, richard and not to mention poor poor mr eko who was more religious in the end then most of them, why were they not invited to heaven? I know it was to bring the circle whole, season 1 cast together again. Not to mention sayid is insulting his “love” of Nadia who he loved for years to meet Shannon in heaven who he had the hots for for about 5 eps or so? Ok all in all I love LOST amazing show but I don’t know if I will get season 6, the ending honestly felt rushed and did not focus on things we had been waiting for for 6 years now, season 6 was just very misleading, Jack has a kid… Ok the son he never had that he always wanted…. Ok I’ll let that go, but Jin ans sun NOT together in this afterlife? Hugo only has good luck but all the other elements are the same? And John…since the island WAS a real experance you would this his afterlife would not be him dealing with the wheelchair, tho we can look at that in many ways so I’ll leave it all to your own views, BUT the bomb going off? Juliet said “it worked”….what did cuz after that the purgatory story started, but they can’t be dead cuz they blew themselves to island present so……I dunno. Amazing show with a ending that you knew everyone would be divided on but just wish this last season could have kept up with all the other seasons, thanks for reading this little rant and see you all in another life time.

  11. Jessica says:

I was disappointed with the ending. The thing is that if it was really all about the characters and always about the characters, that would be fine and dandy. The problem I have is that the writers have claimed all along that the characters were not dead and then they pull this basic purgatory scenario at the end. I get the part where they said the events on the island happened, fine. But what bothered me is to keep hearing in the comments that people should be satisfied with the ending. I understand people feeling cheated. Why? Because since season one, there were puzzling new mysteries that the writers focused on so greatly and you had no idea what was going on (the Others, polar bears, Adam & Eve, the island’s mysterious healing properties, etc.). The fact that none of these issues were addressed in the finale was disappointing. The writers intentionally force-fed you those story lines and in the end there was no explanation. THAT’S why people are upset…it made you feel like all of those crazy incidents/occurrences that you spent so much time pondering over for 6 years were irrelevant to the story.

  12. Jessica says:

Follow up to my post: the Adam & Eve and polar bear storyline was resolved. What I meant by putting that in the post was that those two particular stories were irrelevant to the show. The other story lines (Others, island’s healing properties, why children were special, etc) were merely filler and answers were never really given.

  13. Thomas says:

    Best ending ever.

  14. Michelle says:

I have been watching LOST since Day One. I’ve followed it faithfully and always hoped that it would all make sense one day. The finale was incredibly moving and the actors in this series have always delivered excellent performances. The reason I am so disappointed with the ending is that it just didn’t make sense. (1) OK, so they are all dead and meeting up at this church. Makes sense, but THEN they have to throw in the scene of Jack lying in the bamboo field (profound yes) until the plane goes overhead carrying Hugo, Kate and Sawyer. So, were they dead then? (2) Why show the empty beach at the end? This makes me think they everyone just died in the crash. So, how, Christian, can “it all be real”? Just too many inconsistencies, and that was just in this 2.5 hour finale. I could write a book of the inconsistencies over the past 6 seasons. Sorry, LOST, this finale was a FAIL.

  15. jandrewmorrison says:

Okay, so we know how the story of Jack Shepard ended. Lost was not about him to a lot of people.

Why were there Polar Bears on the island? Why was Walt’s son not as important to the island as the Others thought him to be? Why did The Others find it necessary to kill the Dharma initiative members? What is the Whitmore character suppose to symbolize in the “sideways world”?

If the island was a place to work things out before you move on to heaven, what was getting worked out in Season’s 3-5????

The writers really copped out on this whole season. (Just my 2 cents, but c’mon, I really wasn’t that interested in Jack Shepard’s struggles with mortality.)

  16. Dharma Initiative says:

True, the ending gives quite clear “answers”, but then again this is a huge upset for all the rational, non-religious viewers.

I mean, if you look back at the previous seasons, a lot of things simply don’t add up and that underlines the fact that the writers and producers did their job – they kept everyone interested by creating parallel story lines and always leaving space for a number of possible interpretations purely for commercial reasons. The more types of people watch the show, the larger the profit.

Sadly, even by finishing it off in the most vague way possible, they screwed millions of people over. The ending isn’t even remotely satisfying.

It probably wouldn’t have been so upsetting if it wouldn’t be so plain to see that the plot was always profit-driven. I’m sure they themselves had no idea how are they going to end the series until recently.

  17. Nav says:

6 years, 6 seasons to see two unfit guys have a punchout at the top of a cliff….this was the clash of good vs evil ??……the epic clash where the supposed anti christ/embodiement of all evil, the smoke monster pulls out a knife as an attack move…..truly dissapointing ending….

  18. Justin says:

The island was real. The plane crash was real – they all survived, despite what many on here think. Everything that happened on the island was real. The characters returning to their lives in earlier seasons and then going back to the island – all real. Only this year did the “sideways world” get introduced – a world that is not “real life”, but rather the afterlife.

In the afterlife (sideways world), everything is perfect. People find love. People are healed. People are reunited. Everything works out exactly the way it should – perfectly. It is in this world that they all, one by one, realize they are actually dead – they died through the real events on the island over the last 6 years.

Christian tells Jack in the church that some people died before him, some long after him. The only two people in the church that we didn’t see die on the island were Hurley and Ben (who never went in). Kate was shot – I believe she actually dies. This was never explained, but chalk it up to the idea that they died “long after” Jack died. Personally, I think in episode 1 of season 6, the shot of the island underwater is saying that at some point in the future, the plug at the island’s heart is pulled again and the island sinks, killing Hurley and Ben. Similar to the Sixth Sense, all of the people that interact together in the sideways world AND have visions of the island are all dead – the people that survived (Miles, Frank, etc) actually survived – hence no visions and not showing up at the church.

It’s a simple tale of good vs. evil, and good prevailed. Beautiful show, beautiful ending. Any unanswered questions outside of this explanation are left to the fans and viewers to decide – the way it should be (and exactly like Sopranos, which was also a masterful ending). These shows are artistic, not black and white. Use your imagination and answer the questions the way you want them answered.

  19. Murray says:

Tho this ending will satisfy some, due to its high degree of emotional satisfaction, for those looking for a logical wrap up to the series, it fails miserably. This was a series that clearly built itself into a corner, and then was unable to figure out a way to wrap it up. Give the masses emotional tripe and they will be satisfied.

  20. Sandra Morrissey says:

I loved the ending. Just perfect. I’m going to miss this show.

  21. Janice says:

Thanks Justin,,,,you really cleared a lot up for me. I couldn’t figure out why Kate was in the church before Jack and yet she got off the island. But in the “sideways world” Juliette was married to Jack…shouldn’t they’re interactions have reminded them of their time on the island? Or was it because she was really in love with Sawyer? Either way…thanks,,,I feel better about the ending now, I was really “lost” before.

  22. Greg says:

As far as I can tell the ending had two possible options.

    1. The black smoke (now John) gets off the island, the island sinks, the plane goes to LA, and the ending of everyone in the church is weird but acceptable.

    2. The black smoke stays on the island (although killing the John after the light goes out is consistent as well), the plane crashes and it starts over again back at the beach. In which case good conquers evil. And the history continues to repeat itself.

But since the island never sinks, how does the plane go to LA?
This makes the basic story line inconsistent.

I think that if the island never sinks, the only way to end this, is to have the first scene of the first episode be the last scene of the last episode. And if you think the church ending annoyed people imagine them after seeing that first scene on the beach be the last scene of the final show.

One other thing season 2 and 3 had nothing to do with anything. That was a waste of time.
